Over the past two decades some of the most distinguished new golf courses in America have opened in northern Michigan. Perhaps that’s because the nationally acclaimed golf course architects who designed those courses were inspired by the beauty of region’s hills, forests and waters. Nowhere is that beauty more pronounced than to the northwest of Traverse City in Leelanau County.

This sparsely populated decidedly rural county is made up of 348 square miles of land and 2,184 square miles of water. It is the home of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is considered by many to be the State’s number one attraction. Its unmatched beauty with a climate tempered by the water made it a perfect setting for an Arnold Palmer Signature Course - the course that King’s Challenge was meant to be.

When a group lead by Bob Kuras, president of The Homestead, purchased King’s Challenge last year they knew it had not been what it was meant to be. They also knew it could be a signature course and, with dedication, could become a destination course featuring exceptional playing conditions and unmatched service. When the group adopted a goal of becoming a destination course they decided that the course needed a new name that would tie it to Leelanau County and portray the unique high-end experience it would offer.

“While working on the new tee boxes for No. 8 we discovered a view of Lake Michigan’s Manitou Passage. Immediately, we realized that name was the tie to Leelanau County. We also realized that the grandeur of the passage would portray what we are doing here: creating a world-class golf experience on a course designed by one of the greatest golfers to play the game”, said Kuras.

To create that experience the new ownership group reestablished a relationship with Palmer and brought in other experts. One was Wadsworth Golf Construction, the most respected golf course contractor in the country with over 800 projects to its credit. The other was Peridian International, a leader in land planning and landscape architecture for resort destinations throughout the world. Together, Palmer, Wadsworth and Peridian envisioned scores of changes, some minor, some major, that would be made to bring the course and facility up to the championship level experience that an Arnold Palmer “Signature Design” is noted for.

Wadsworth worked from early spring until early winter to make the majority of the recommended changes. Renovations included the repositioning, adding and squaring off of tee-boxes, widening of fairways in key landing areas, renovating bunkers, lengthening some holes, restoring areas with native grasses and clearing of trees and brush to open vistas to the area’s natural beauty.

Complimenting the golf course work was a complete renovation of the entry drive, parking area, cart storage, starter’s plaza and clubhouse. The new clubhouse features a tastefully detailed stone and cedar shake exterior. Inside, the newly created library and trophy alcoves, club room, grill and golf shop feature stone fireplaces, luxurious furnishings, oriental rugs, warm rich woods and original art. New patio doors lead to a multi-level patio that affords stunning views of the 18th hole and offers guests’ outdoor food and beverage services.

The completely-redesigned Clubhouse features an outdoor dining terrace with sweeping views of no. 18 and full table service from the Grill Room.

“We adopted a very high goal and are delighted with the contributions that Palmer, Wadsworth and Peridian made toward our achieving our goal of becoming a destination course. We are looking forward to completing the work and providing the playing conditions and service discerning golfers desire and deserve,” said Kuras.

There’s no better way to welcome spring to Northern Michigan than with a tour of the award-winning wineries of Leelanau Peninsula. The Homestead Resort’s annual “Spring in Bloom Wine Tour Weekend,” May 14-16, this year will visit three wineries on the east coast of the peninsula: Chateau de Leelanau, L. Mawby Vineyards and Shady Lane Cellars.

The package includes two nights’ lodging (in Fiddler’s Pond, Little Belle or The Inn), continental breakfast each morning, and a tasting tour of the three Leelanau Peninsula wineries on Saturday – with transportation and to-go lunch. On Saturday evening, guests will enjoy an exquisite five-course winemaker dinner – featuring local wines – prepared by The Homestead’s Executive Chef, John Piombo. Packages start at $238 per couple, per night.

The Leelanau Peninsula, flanked by Lake Michigan to the west and Grand Traverse Bay to the east, is an ideal grape-growing region – one of four federally recognized American Viticultural Areas in Michigan. The waters of Lake Michigan help with the warming and cooling of the land – a “lake effect” that pairs well with the area’s placement along the 45th Parallel to create a “cool climate” region like no other. Throw in the rolling hills, sprawling vineyards and orchards and quaint charm, and you have the premier scenic destination.

The wineries, all located in Suttons Bay, include:

• Chateau de Leelanau – Experience the fresh allure of Leelanau Peninsula estate wine, handcrafted for your enjoyment – where a love for the vines, a desire to let the grapes speak for themselves and a passion for expressing over a dozen styles of wines, makes this the perfect place to experience award-winning vintages of cold-climate varietals. (www.chateaudeleelanau.com)

• L. Mawby – The first vines were planted here in the spring of 1973. The emphasis is on sparkling wines, both methode champenoise and cuve close. The current annual production is about 8,000 cases, and the winemaking style remains pure – small lots, made with minimal handling. (www.lmawby.com)

• Shady Lane Cellars – Located on a historic 150-acre farm between Traverse City and Suttons Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula and strategically situated to benefit from the meso climate created by Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay, this is a prime vineyard site. (www.shadylanecellars.com)

The Homestead is Northern Michigan’s largest waterfront resort community, located in the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – a unit of the National Park Service. Along with its unmatched natural setting and miles of frontage on Lake Michigan and the Crystal River, the resort offers guest pools, tennis and golf in the summer; downhill and cross country skiing in the winter; and shops, restaurants, meeting centers and the luxurious new Spa Amira throughout all four seasons.

Nordic walking poles from Glen Arbor, Michigan are helping Wounded Warriors move

Nordic Walking Poles are radically improving balance, stability, gait, walking posture and walking comfort of Wounded Warriors! Quality Nordic Walking Poles from WWW.SKIWALKING.COM and the American Nordic Walking System have been donated to Wounded Warrior Programs at Walter Reed, Fort Carson, Fort Lewis/Madigan/McChord and Vicenza, Italy.

Many of the soldiers attending Edwards’ Nordic Walking Classes at Fort Carson in Colorado came with canes and/or walkers. One of the soldiers had just been released from his wheel chair. All found much improved balance, stability, walking posture and walking comfort.

Members of the Warrior Transition Battalion and others got to test-drive the durable one-piece Nordic walking poles custom fit to his/her specific height at the Soldier Family Assistance Center at Fort Carson. WTB Command Sgt. Maj. Jim Bunch also tested the poles for himself. Participants in the Nordic Walking Clinics found that the poles radically improved balance, stability, walking posture, walking gait and walking comfort. Many of the Wounded Warriors commented on how they the poles really did helped to reduce the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back.

Soldiers assigned to the Warrior Transition Battalion are recovering from all types of injuries and many experience balance problems from leg, back and traumatic brain injuries.

According to Susanne Harland, Fort Carson Station manager, American Red Cross, the Red Cross has a mission to help, as they can, with the recovery of these wounded warriors. She has been involved with helping wounded soldiers since the Vietnam War era.

“It’s my love, working with the wounded warriors,” she said. Harland said that she is always trying to find new and innovative ways to help the soldiers.

One way she has been able to help here is to bring in special programs and speakers. One such person was Pete Edwards, founder of WWW.SKIWALKING.COM and the American Nordic Walking System. She found out about Edwards through Wade Walrond, who is with the Walter Reed Station of the Red Cross in Washington - Edwards had donated much-appreciated Nordic Walking Poles to his Wounded Warrior Program too.

Edwards, a former marathon runner, had to give up running because of his knee and later realized that walking with the correct length poles eliminated his knee pain. Edwards now claims that he is comfortable not only Nordic Walking with his poles, but Nordic Running too – running with poles. Edwards, a running and skiing coach, is also certified as a Nordic walking instructor. Nordic walking is much like cross-country skiing (gentle on the weight bearing joints) and the poles are helping more than just athletes recover from their injuries.

According to Edwards, by using the perfect length poles (shorter than Nordic ski poles) for additional balance, the injured person has better control over his or her balance. Additionally, he said, the two poles are often better than using a cane or walker, because a cane can cause a person to favor one side or the other, and both have the user hunch over, which may increase problems in recovery and balance. He said that he not only has used them for injured athletes, but has worked with people who have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Nueropathy, arthritis, bursitis, scoliosis, lumbar stenosis, fibromyalgia, post polio, osteoporosis, stroke recovery, cancer recovery and other limitations to walking.

(Photo - Pete Edwards’ Son Keefer leading the troops and staff during one of the clinics.)

Edwards came to the Soldier Family Assistance Center in August to lead injured soldiers in the proper use of the Nordic Walking poles and to train therapists in using the poles as part of rehabilitation programs. His 12-year-old son, Keefer Edwards, assisted him. They both flew in from Michigan, volunteering their services. Within minutes of using the poles, all of the soldiers showed a marked improvement in their mobility.

One of the Wounded Warriors said “It’s really good, better than using the walker. I feel really good.”

Edwards donates one-piece Nordic Walking Poles to the Wounded Warriors Program. He offers 14 standard lengths, plus custom makes poles for individuals over 6′ 7″ at no extra cost. His special one-piece SWIX and EXEL Nordic Walking Poles are safer, lighter and much more durable than cheap twist-locking or flip-locking adjustable length/telescoping/collapsible poles. Skiers only use one-piece poles for skiing and they prove to be much more user friendly for Nordic Walking and Nordic Running than cheap collapsible poles that can fail/collapse unexpectedly, rattle and/or vibrate. Edwards warns to especially avoid the cheap twist-lock and flip-lock poles flooding the market from China.

According to Nick Mahood, SWIX USA Nordic Walking Director, “Pete Edwards, The American Nordic Walking System and SKIWALKING.COM’s owner/founder/coach, has single handedly introduced thousands of Americans to Nordic Walking through his enthusiastic Nordic Walking clinics! I have no doubt that Edwards is the #1 retailer of Nordic Walking Poles in the USA! You can quote me on that!”

Toast the Season - A Wine & Food Celebration with Holiday Themed Gifts

It has become a Northwest Michigan holiday tradition - the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association’s Toast the Season wine tour. Once again, two consecutive weekends of tasting and touring will be offered, November 7 & 8 and also on November 14 & 15. The tour is self guided and you may visit 16 of the member wineries (up to 8 per day) in any order at any time between the hours of 11am to 6pm Saturday, or noon to 5pm Sunday.

“This is a great time for families and friends to gather to celebrate the upcoming season and even get started on their holiday shopping,” says Adam Satchwell of Shady Lane Cellars. “Wines and other items from Leelanau Peninsula tasting rooms are the perfect gift for the holidays. Our wines compliment holiday meals, cocktail parties or any gathering and they make great gifts!”

The annual Toast the Season wine trail tour features a special wine pour, accompanied by holiday themed gourmet food, at each of the 17 Leelanau Peninsula member wineries. At your starting winery you will be given a commemorative glass, a unique holiday ornament and a holiday gift basket from the members of Sleeping Bear Gourmet (a group of local, fair trade and organic food producers).

“We’re excited to participate in Toast the Season. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate the rich culinary heritage of this region and aligns perfectly with Sleeping Bear Gourmet’s commitment to a local food economy,” said Timothy Fitzgerald Young of Food For Thought. Comprised of small family owned and operated businesses, Sleeping Bear Gourmet members all share common values that represent the highest gourmet standard in each respective category as well as common commitment to sustainable business practices.

Toast the Season Food Drive

This year in conjunction with Toast the Season, LPVA will work with the Father Fred Foundation (fatherfred.org) to collect canned food. Just bring your canned food donation to any of the 17 LPVA wineries and drop it in the collection box to help families in need in the Grand Traverse region this holiday season.

Tickets

Tickets for Toast the Season are $50 per person or $75 per couple (couple ticket holders receive two glasses, pours and food at each winery, but only one gift basket and ornament).
